OUR PHILOSOPHY
Ahead of the Rest was founded following one basic philosophy: When Black people are given equitable resources, tools, and opportunities, we thrive. We work with Black youth to level the playing field as they get started in life.
Our mission is to teach youth entrepreneurship and empowerment through hair.

Our community of businesses, organizations, schools, and community members form a robust network of resources for our youth. Together, they help us empower young people with the tools, resources, and skills necessary for getting started in life. Whether offering support services or employing our graduates, our exceptional partners play a pivotal role in illuminating the path toward a promising future for our young people.
BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Like many first-generation Black college students, Nia was overwhelmed, stressed about her future, and second-guessing her every move. She felt the weight of being the "first, the only, and the few" and truly believed the cards were stacked against her and dropped out of college. With the support of Ahead of the Rest mentors and programs, Nia is now confident, supported, and re-enrolled in college. She works part-time as a graphic design intern, laying the foundation for a bright future for herself.

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE MODEL
AHEAD ACADEMY
Ahead Academy is our social enterprise sister company. Ahead Academy provides hands-on training and classes that teach girls entrepreneurship and empowerment through hair. Participants learn the basics of braiding and business.
For every sale made at Ahead Academy, a portion of the proceeds comeback to Ahead of the Rest.
Through this partnership, Ahead of the Rest and Ahead Academy are a part of a mission to bring equity, access, and opportunities to young Black people in Chicago.
We are proud to be part of a social enterprise movement to transform communities through practical, hands-on training.
